Bloom time: Blue Dicks (Dichelostemma capitatum)

In the foreground is one of several flowers of Dichelostemma capitatum on the porch in the San Pedro Annex. They've been blooming for a week or more. The porch is south facing and it's been a good location for potted bulbs.

Blue Dicks are always good for a giggle among those who haven't heard the name before. I Googled the origin of the common name and there's no definitive answer as to where it came from. "Dicks" is similar to the first syllable of Dichelostemma but one source speculated that the origin was (potentially a salty one) from gold miners.
